Meet Jezebele Alicea-Virella — a compassionate, committed volunteer who brings joy and connection to the families around Foster Village. Since moving to Dripping Springs in 2022, Jezebele has been an essential part of the childcare team, showing up with a heart for service and a steady presence that helps kids feel safe, seen, and loved.
How did you get connected to Foster Village?
When I moved to Dripping Springs in 2022, I was looking for ways to get involved in the community, particularly in supporting children and families in need. I have always been passionate about fostering, and while I considered becoming a foster parent myself, my husband was concerned that my deep passion for the cause might lead to frustration given the challenges within the foster system. During my search for volunteer opportunities, I stumbled upon Foster Village, and its mission immediately resonated with me. Without hesitation, I joined the volunteer team, knowing that this was a place where I could make a meaningful impact.
What does a typical volunteer day look like for you?
I serve primarily in the childcare team, but I also help in hospitality and at the resource center. Most of my time is spent in childcare, where I care for and play with the kids while their foster parents attend meetings or receive support services. A typical shift includes setting up a welcoming and safe space, engaging the kids in fun activities, and providing comfort and encouragement when needed. It’s rewarding to know that, even for a short time, we’re giving foster parents the peace of mind to focus on important conversations while their children are cared for in a loving environment. Every time I volunteer, I see firsthand the impact Foster Village has, and it only deepens my commitment to serving this community.
Why did you decide to jump in at Foster Village?
Foster Village’s mission aligns perfectly with my heart for service. I believe every child deserves a safe and loving environment, and I wanted to be part of a community that supports foster families in tangible ways. Seeing how this organization steps in to provide practical resources, emotional support, and a sense of belonging for both foster parents and children inspired me to get involved right away. Volunteering here allows me to serve God by serving this community, and it has been an incredibly fulfilling experience.
Can you share a meaningful moment from your time volunteering?
One moment that stands out to me was during a childcare shift when I was caring for a little boy who was initially very withdrawn. He didn’t want to play or engage, and you could tell he was carrying a lot on his little shoulders. Over time, with patience and encouragement, he slowly started opening up—first with small smiles, then engaging in play, and eventually laughing and running around with the other kids. It was a beautiful reminder of how important it is to create a space where children feel safe, seen, and valued. Seeing his transformation in just a few hours reinforced why Foster Village’s work is so crucial.
What have you learned from your time at Foster Village?
Volunteering at Foster Village has been an eye-opening and deeply fulfilling experience. I’ve learned just how vital community support is for foster families—not just in providing resources, but in offering encouragement, understanding, and a sense of belonging. It has shown me the resilience of both foster parents and children, and how even small acts of kindness can make a significant impact.
I’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the foster system and the unique challenges these families face. Through my time in childcare, I’ve learned patience, adaptability, and the power of simply being present for a child. I see firsthand how love, stability, and a safe space can help kids begin to heal and thrive.
Most importantly, this experience has reinforced my belief in serving others as a way to serve God. It’s a reminder that while the foster system may not be perfect, the support we provide as a community can bring real, positive change to the lives of these families.
