Our Village of Volunteers featuring Jean

by Christina Hite

Meet Jean — a volunteer at Foster Village who brings care, thoughtfulness, and a steady presence to our resource center. Whether she’s assembling welcome packs or helping keep donations organized, Jean shows up with a heart for supporting families and a deep respect for the mission. In her words, here’s what it’s like to be part of the village at Foster Village.

How did you get connected to Foster Village?

When our daughter and her husband suddenly became foster parents to their 5-day-old great-nephew, the local Community Closet in Massachusetts came to their aid with newborn supplies and resources, which greatly helped get them through the first few weeks as new parents. A friend in Austin who is a foster mom told me about Foster Village when I expressed interest in volunteering for an organization similar to the one that had helped our daughter and son-in-law

What does a typical volunteer day look like for you?

As a part of the North Resource Center team, I have been helping with putting together welcome packs for new foster parents, sorting and organizing clothing, and inventorying donations.

Why did you decide to jump in at Foster Village?

Since I had recently retired from my job as a librarian in the tiny town of Florence, I had some time on my hands and wanted to get involved with an organization that helped foster parents

Can you share a meaningful moment from your time volunteering?

During spring break, I had the opportunity to work with several moms who came to volunteer with their children. Just listening to the kids as they sorted and folded toddler clothes was so much fun. I was impressed by how on task the kids were and how much they enjoyed it

What have you learned from your time at Foster Village?

As someone who was not connected with the foster world before, I have learned how organizations such as Foster Village are essential in the success of the foster process. They do everything they can to assist with fostering — from providing necessities to giving foster families a place to get together
